NOTICE:  “Conditional/Contingent upon funding availability” for travel awards to Scientific Meetings taking place after June 30, 2010.

Please be advised of the following information pertaining to FASEB MARC Program travel award funding for meetings and programs that occur after June 30, 2010:

FASEB is awaiting a funding decision for a grant renewal application that was submitted to NIGMS/NIH.  The funding decision is expected by the end of May/early June 2010.   Presently, funding for FASEB MARC Program Travel Awards to the FASEB Societies Scientific Meetings and Conferences is available only for meetings and conferences scheduled to occur before June 30, 2010.  Any FASEB MARC Program Travel Award offered for meetings that will take place after June 30, 2010 will be offered on a "conditional/contingent upon funding availability" basis.  Travel award recipients who choose to accept a travel award under these conditions will be required to sign and return a Statement of Agreement and Understanding Form indicating their understanding and agreement with these conditions.  Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

The FASEB MARC Program provides funding for travel awards to support the participation of Faculty/ Mentors and Students, and Poster/Platform (Oral) Presenters at selected scientific meetings and conferences. The awards help to defray meeting registration and travel-related expenses (lodging, transportation, per diem) for eligible underrepresented minority* undergraduate and graduate students, post-baccalaureates, postdoctorates, junior faculty and mentors/faculty scientists in the biomedical and behavioral sciences.

Full-time faculty members/mentors, undergraduate/graduate students, post-baccalaureates and postdoctoral fellows meeting the citizenship/residency requirements at accredited postsecondary minority institutions are also eligible to apply for the travel awards. (Refer to the Faculty/Students and Poster/Oral Presenter Travel Award applications for the travel award amount.)

Travel awards are processed as reimbursements to the award recipients. An award recipient will be required to pay his/her meeting- and travel-related expenses first, and then request reimbursement from the FASEB MARC Program Office after completion of the meeting/conference.

* Qualified ethnic minority groups that are identified as being underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences include: African Americans, Alaskan Natives, Hispanic Americans, American Indians/Native Americans who maintain tribal affiliation or community attachment, and Natives of the U.S. Pacific Islands (Guam, Hawai'i and American Samoa only.)

To receive support from the FASEB MARC Program, all applicants must be USA citizens, or non-citizen nationals (a non-citizen national is a person who, although not a citizen of the United States of America, owes permanent allegiance to the USA.  This is generally a person born in a land that is not a state, but that is under USA sovereignty, jurisdiction, or administration -- for example, American Samoa), or permanent residents.   An individual lawfully admitted for permanent residence must possess an alien registration receipt card (I-551 -- commonly known as a 'green card') prior to applying for funding and participation.  Individuals on temporary or student visas, those seeking asylum, or refugees are not eligible for support for FASEB MARC Program funding.

The purpose of the MARC Program is to achieve greater participation in the biomedical and behavioral research enterprise of this country by individuals from underrepresented minority groups as described above.  Therefore, participant selection will take into consideration whether an individual’s participation would help achieve the overall goals and objectives of the MARC Program.

There are two types of travel awards available:

bullet

(See listing of eligible meetings and conferences). The faculty/mentor must nominate up to two students and/or post-baccalaureates who are pursuing research careers in a life sciences discipline.
