Summer Research Opportunity Program

Opportunities Available

Interested in a summer research experience with an established FASEB society member/research scientist? Locate a summer research opportunity program at several host universities, institutions and laboratories of FASEB society members by viewing our list of programs and independent investigators that are "FASEB MARC Program approved." Or, complete the FASEB SROP Sign-Up Form to request FASEB's assistance in pairing you with a "FASEB MARC Program approved" SROP Host Mentor.

Are you a graduating college senior in need of additional research skills and academic training prior to applying to graduate school? Check out the list of NIH-funded Postbaccalaureate Research Education Programs (PREP) that are currently recruiting underrepresented minorities who hold a recent baccalaureate degree in a biomedically relevant science.

PREP participants work as apprentice scientists in a preceptor's laboratory and participate in student development and education activities. This program is expected to strengthen the research skills and academic competitiveness of participants for pursuit of a graduate degree while also stimulating them to have an interest in addressing the health problems that disproportionately affect minorities and the medically underserved in the United States.

Interested in hosting an undergraduate student or post-baccalaureate in your lab for a summer research experience? The FASEB MARC Program is compiling a list of students who are seeking assistance in identifying a potential SROP Mentor/Institution for a summer research experience for the Summer of 2009. Please view our list of interested students and feel free to contact the students if you have a summer research opportunity available to offer the students. (Copies of the resumes and contact information are available online.)

Travel and Subsistence Awards

The FASEB MARC Program strives to develop the best research opportunities for underrepresented minority students by providing financial support for students to visit, learn, and participate in new research techniques at prominent research laboratories and institutions during the productive summer “recess” periods. We have been able to accomplish this initiative by establishing alliances with several research universities, institutions, and laboratories with established summer research opportunity programs. Our program provides funding to supplement and/or cover the travel and subsistence (transportation, lodging, and per diem) expenses for the underrepresented minority students who have been selected to participate in summer research opportunity programs at several host universities, institutions, and laboratories. In addition, we also provide funding to support the participation of the SROP student to the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students meeting or a FASEB Member Society Annual/Regional Meeting.

Eligibility and Requirements: Student

All student award recipients must be U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents (‘green card’) of the U.S., and must reside within the U.S. or U.S. territories.

All full-time students meeting the citizenship/residency requirements at accredited postsecondary minority institutions are eligible for funding consideration. Full-time underrepresented minority* students meeting the citizenship/residency requirements at accredited majority institutions are also eligible for funding consideration.

All student award recipients must be accepted to participate in a summer research experience at an accredited university/institution that is not their home university/institution. (i.e. An SROP faculty mentor at "University of X" may not apply for funding to support a "University of X" student for a summer research experience at "University of X.")

* Qualified ethnic minority groups that are identified as being under-represented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences include: African Americans, Alaskan Natives, Hispanic Americans, American Indians/Native Americans and Natives of the U.S. Pacific Islands (Guam or Hawai'i.) Qualified underrepresented minority groups must be citizens or non-citizen nationals of the United States of America or must have been lawfully admitted to the United States of America for permanent residence and have in possession a permanent visa (green card) at the time of application submittal. Individuals on temporary or student visas are not eligible for FASEB MARC Program funding.

NOTE:

We are prohibited from providing funds to employees and trainees at federal facilities who receive federal support for their salary/wages. For more information regarding Federal Travel Regulations, visit http://www.gsa.gov and type in Federal Travel Regulations in the search box.

Eligibility and Requirements: Host Mentor

NOTE: All SROP Host Mentors must be an active member of at least one of the constituent societies of FASEB. Membership status will be verified.

Applications for students who have applied to and have been officially accepted in a summer research opportunity program must be prepared by the SROP host mentor or designee at the SROP host university, institution or laboratory and submitted to the FASEB MARC Program Office.

The application package should include:

**All FASEB MARC Program applications are in MS Word form format.**

SROP Funding Guidelines

The “host institution” must complete and submit student applications to the MARC Program Office. We will not accept applications directly from students. It is important that the host institution also complete the list of estimated expenses and submit the form along with the SROP application. Once the estimated amount is submitted to our office and approved for funding, there cannot be any increases to that funding amount.

Applications cannot be accepted or funded after the summer program start date.

All communication and correspondence in regard to the sponsorship of the SROP student must be with the MARC Program Office and the Host Mentor/Institution directly.

Any reimbursements will be made directly to the Host Institution once a compiled list of expenses and original receipts are submitted by the host institution, no later than October 1st. In addition, the required written report from each funded student should also be submitted along with the request for reimbursement.

WE WILL NOT ACCEPT REIMBURSEMENT SUBMITTALS FROM STUDENTS. A sample spreadsheet of how the expenses MUST be submitted is provided directly to the host institution in the confirmation package once the student
has been approved for funding.

NOTE:

Lodging/Housing may be considered for payment in advance per 4-week periods as long as the rental/leasing agent/landlord name, address and telephone number is provided with advance authorization. All reimbursements must be accompanied by appropriate receipts. Expenses claimed without receipts will not be reimbursed.

If any advances are needed for the student, the host institution must contact the MARC Program office for approval first. Once approved, an invoice must be submitted to our office with the following information: Student’s name, the expense needed for advance, the program start and finish dates, address to send check and to whom to make the check payable.

We do not fund the creation of summer programs. The summer program must already exist. When submitting the student application, please enclose information detailing the undergraduate student summer program. This is to ensure the program falls within the scope of our program goals and objectives.

Please be advised: WE DO NOT PAY INDIRECT COSTS.

Reimbursement submittal must be in the FASEB MARC Program office no later than October 1st with appropriate documentation to receive payment reimbursement. If the funded student does not complete the program in its entirety, we will rescind the SROP support award.

Refer to the Summer Research Opportunities Program application form or contact the FASEB MARC Program Office at marc@faseb.org for more information.
